5/10 - 5/14/2017
It's another week with another round of groovy shows to catch your attention.
(Editor's note: You might notice a distinct lack of Saturday events in this week's roundup. That's because our fine city is killing the game, and we'll have a separate quick and dirty guide for Saturday events coming out tomorrow.)
Mule Musiq’s Toshiya Kawasaki lands at Housepitality this week for a rare stateside appearance. The Japanese selector has a cult-like following, having signed everyone from Minilogue to Optimo to DJ Koze and Henrik Schwarz. Michael Tello and Fil Latorre will open. As usual, it’s free RSVP before 11, and free bubbles from 9-10.
An excellent double headliner at Monarch this Friday. Nathan Barato always promises a fun and energetic tech house sound. Art Department has enjoyed much success on labels such as Crosstown Rebels and his own No. 19 Music. The intimate venue with our favorite soundsystem is likely to be an excellent option for your Friday night. Disco Knights/Deep Blue's Rooz & Bo will open.
While Simian Mobile Disco first came to prominence with their nu-disco-with-an-edge sound (and a collaboration with Justice), their present material and DJ sets lean in a distinctly minimal techno direction (see collaborations with Bicep, Matrixxman, and John Tejada). Speaking of more double headliners, Cititrax/Minimal Wave boss Veronica Vasicka is also on the bill. She’s known as heading the two successful labels, hosting a radio show in New York City, and her obscure collection of rare electronic gems that cross all genres from synthwave to house to Italodisco and techno.
Surface Tension continues to fill a distinct void in San Francisco of more experimental offerings. This time it’s Demdike Stare (Dead-Cert, Modern Love) and Bleie. It also includes a back room takeover by Oakland’s own Club Chai.
We personally can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than any party at the Midway Patio. Permission to Land is consistently booking quality house and deep house acts. The patio parties offer a limited but delicious selection of food and drink and big sound. This week has Dutch producer Matthew Dekay (All Day I Dream cofounder, Innervisions, Maeve), along with MD (Los Angeles) and Rachel Torro.
