Need To Know: Mama Snake, Ash Lauryn, Lauren Flax

Editor's note: Welcome to our new series - maybe they’re new or unsigned but on the rise, or they’re an unsung hero who’s been at it awhile, or are big in Europe but haven’t quite found a foothold in the US yet. We’re spotlighting female artists and female dominated crews that should be on your radar.

LAUREN FLAX

New York City and Berlin are no stranger to this producer, and neither are Romy (of The xx), Sia, and even Tricky (Massive Attack), all of whom she's collaborated with. She demonstrates a contemporary range of classic-to-acid-to-bass house in her productions and mixes. Her solo productions are worth noting as well, with her most recent being 2017's "U Know" EP out on Nervous Records. She's also seen the remix treatment with a diverse group of artists like Mystic Bill, Peaches, Alinka, Junior Vasquez, Marc Kinchen, and Kim Ann Foxman. Did we mention she also produces trip hop with Lauren Dillard as CREEP?

Notable releases:

  • "U Know" EP - Nervous Records, 2017
  • Pleasure Principle (w/ Kim Ann Foxman) - CREEP INTL, 2014
  • "You're Basic" (w/ Alinka) - Get Up Recordings
  • "Day" (as CREEP, with Lauren Dillard) - Young Turks

MAMA SNAKE

One third of the all-woman, Copenhagen-based Aperion Crew (pictured right with Courtesy), Mama Snake does her own flavor of lo-fi inflected raw techno. She also runs the Ectotherm/Endotherm label. Rollicking, sophisticated, and well on the forefront of modern techno releases, Mama Snake and her crew are well worth keeping an eye on. She's done some excellent mixes for names like Lobster Theremin, NTS Radio, and Culture Box.

ASH LAURYN

Detroit-born but Atlanta-based, we first experienced her sending the dance floor into peak-time-frenzy territory just before Shanti Celeste at Discwoman Detroit. Fusing a knack for traditional Detroit techno sounds (a la Octave One and Robert Hood) with more warm, soulful house tunes like those of Delano Smith and Kerri Chandler.

For a good idea of what Ash Lauryn has to offer the dancefloor we recommend the mix she did for Discwoman in preparation for their Movement Afterparty. We have a feeling she caught quite a few ears between this mix and her set at the party and greatly look forward to her upcoming gigs.
